Who Is Dr.Kanks? The Scientist, the Formulator, and the Woman Behind the Brand
Who is Dr.Kanks?
Dr.Kanks did not begin with a marketing plan.
It began with curiosity.
Before I became a beauty founder, I was a cardiovascular scientist. My world was research, experiments, data, mechanisms and asking one question over and over again:
Why does this happen, and how can we make it better?
That way of thinking never left me.
When I eventually began formulating beauty products, I approached them the same way I approached science. I was not interested in simply making something that smelled good or looked beautiful on a shelf.
I wanted to understand the ingredients.
I wanted to understand what the skin actually needed.
And most importantly, I wanted to create products that women would continue reaching for because of how their skin felt after using them.
That is how Dr.Kanks began.
From scientist to beauty formulator
My background was not in traditional beauty.
I came from science.
I spent years studying cardiovascular biology, working in laboratories and learning how small changes in a formulation, environment or biological system could completely change an outcome.
So when I started experimenting with hair and skin products, I naturally became obsessed with formulation.
Why was one oil absorbing quickly while another stayed on top of the skin?
Why did one cream leave the skin soft for hours while another disappeared within minutes?
Why did certain products smell incredible but leave very dry skin still feeling dry?
Those questions became the foundation of Dr.Kanks.
I started formulating for performance first.
Fragrance came second.
Trends came much later.
I use food and plants in my beauty products
One of the easiest ways to understand Dr.Kanks is this:
I am the scientist who decided to use food and plants in beauty products.
Shea butter.
Kalahari melon seed oil.
Sunflower oil.
Olive oil.
Baobab.
Plant-derived oils, butters and ingredients that have been used for generations suddenly became part of my formulation world.
But simply putting a beautiful ingredient on a label is not enough.
At Dr.Kanks, an ingredient has to have a reason for being there.
Does it improve texture?
Does it support dry skin?
Does it make the formula lighter?
Does it help create a richer seal over moisturized skin?
Does it make the product more comfortable to use?
If the answer is no, I am not interested in adding it just because it sounds impressive.
Why I refuse to make fragrance the most important part of the product
This is one of the things that surprises people most about Dr.Kanks.
Customers sometimes ask me to make the fragrance stronger.
And sometimes, I say no.
That does not mean fragrance is unimportant. I love beautiful scents, and many Dr.Kanks customers do too.
But fragrance cannot become more important than the formula.
If increasing fragrance means compromising the ingredients, changing the feel of the product or moving away from the reason I created it, I would rather not do it.
There are already many products designed primarily to make you smell incredible.
I wanted Dr.Kanks to do something else.
I wanted women to say:
“My skin feels incredible.”
The fragrance should complement that experience, not replace it.
Then my customers taught me something
Dr.Kanks has grown because customers talk to us.
A lot.
They tell me what they love.
They tell me what they want changed.
They tell me when something is too light, too heavy, too shiny, not shiny enough or when they need something richer.
And I listen.
One of the biggest things customers taught me was that there is no single definition of “moisturized.”
One woman wants an oil that absorbs quickly because she does not want anything transferring onto her clothes.
Another wants to look extremely glossy.
Another has skin so dry that oil alone is not enough.
Another wants fragrance-free products.
Another notices that her skin has completely changed after menopause.
That feedback changed the way I think about body care.
Instead of trying to create one miracle product for everyone, I started creating different textures and routines for different needs.
Your body skin is aging too
We talk constantly about aging facial skin.
Serums.
Retinoids.
Peptides.
Antioxidants.
Eye creams.
Night creams.
But your face is not the only part of your body that changes with age.
Body skin changes too.
Women tell us that the lotion they used for years suddenly does not feel like enough.
Skin may feel drier.
It may appear duller.
Texture can change.
What worked at 25 may not feel the same at 45, 55 or 65.
And yet the body-care industry often treats everyone as though their biggest concern is simply smelling good.
That is one of the areas where I believe Dr.Kanks has an opportunity to do something different.
Body skin deserves serious formulation too.
Moisturizing is not always one step
This is also why I talk so much about routines.
Sometimes a customer tells us:
“I used the oil, but my skin is still dry.”
My first question is often:
What did you put underneath it?
Oil and lotion do not necessarily perform the same job.
For very dry skin, I often recommend starting with a water-based lotion or cream and then following with an oil to help seal in that moisture.
And for extremely dry areas, a richer butter may be added afterward.
That is why some Dr.Kanks routines are built around layers:
Hydrate. Seal. Protect.
You do not necessarily need more products.
You need the right products in the right order.
Dr.Kanks is not for everyone
And I am completely comfortable saying that.
If your number-one priority is finding the strongest-smelling body product possible, Dr.Kanks may not always be your brand.
If you want every formula to follow whatever ingredient happens to be trending online that month, we may disappoint you.
But if you care about what touches your skin…
If you want to understand why an ingredient was chosen…
If your skin is dry, mature, changing or simply demanding something different…
If you want a founder who listens to customers and is willing to reformulate instead of pretending every product is perfect…
Then you may understand exactly why Dr.Kanks exists.
Built by science. Shaped by women.
Science may have taught me how to formulate.
But customers taught me how to build Dr.Kanks.
Every comment.
Every farmers-market conversation.
Every email.
Every woman who told me, “I need more shine.”
Every customer who said, “I love this, but I need something richer.”
Every person who asked for an unscented version.
Those conversations have shaped the brand.
That is why I often describe Dr.Kanks as:
Science-backed. Customer-led. Purpose-driven.
Because that is exactly what it is.
What comes next
Dr.Kanks is entering a new chapter.
We are going deeper into the needs of mature and changing body skin.
We are exploring ingredients traditionally associated with facial skincare and asking why the body should not receive the same level of attention.
We are continuing to explore African oils, butters and botanical ingredients.
And we are continuing to listen.
Because the goal has never been to create the most products.
The goal is to create products that have a reason to exist.
And that philosophy is not changing.
Welcome to Dr.Kanks.
The scientist. The formulator. The woman behind the brand.
